Jewish extremists attempt to import hate to Canada

Urge Ottawa Public Library to rescind platform for anti-Muslim speaker

(February 1, 2013) The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR.CAN), a national Muslim civil liberties organization, is calling on supporters and concerned Canadians to immediately contact the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) to urge that it revoke permission for the appearance of an anti-Muslim hatemonger at its main branch on February 4, 2013.
Gavin Boby is an openly Islamophobic British activist linked to the extremist English Defence League. Mr. Boby advocates publicly against the building of mosques, a fundamental right protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“CAIR.CAN fully supports freedom of expression within the bounds of the law. At the same time Canadian taxpayers should not be expected to subsidize speech which aims to denigrate and undermine Canadian values and threaten social cohesion. We look to our elected officials to clearly denounce this sort of speech and to send a message that vilifying minorities in a public venue will not be tolerated,” says CAIR.CAN Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee.
“We understand that the OPL, according to its own policies (lines 20-21), does not allow its facilities to be used for activities that contravene the Ontario Human Rights Code or the Criminal Code of Canada. Freedom of worship is a Canadian value and protected by law, whereas Mr. Boby and his sponsors openly seek to undermine this human right and demonize Muslim communities. The library should therefore rescind the invitation on those grounds.”

CAIR.CAN says given that Mr. Boby is a self-described Islamophobe who says that Islam “encourages paedophilia, sexual abuse and pimping”, law enforcement should be alert to his scheduled appearances and monitor them accordingly.
Mr. Boby is being hosted by an organization called ‘ACT! For Canada’ which mirrors the anti-Muslim organization ‘ACT! For America’. ACT! For Canada’s web site includes hateful material comparing Muslims to Nazis.

1. I am concerned about the impending appearance on February 4 by anti-Muslim British hatemonger Gavin Boby at the Ottawa Public Library, a tax-payer supported public institution.
2. Mr. Boby publicly campaigns to prevent the building of Mosques. He says the Muslim faith “encourages paedophilia, sexual abuse and pimping.” The organization who rented the OPL venue has compared Muslims to Nazis.
3. The right to worship is a human right protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is a Canadian value. Mr. Boby is attacking fundamental Canadian values and the Charter.
4. Although Mr. Boby is free to speak in Canada, the Ottawa Public Library as a publicly funded institution should not give a platform to known hatemongers to spread hatred.
SAMPLE LETTER
Ms. Jan Harder, City Councillor Chair of the Board Ottawa Public Library
Dear Ms. Harder,
I write to you as a concerned Canadian about the impending visit to Ottawa on February 4, 2013 by foreign anti-Muslim hatemonger Gavin Boby who is scheduled to speak at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) on the aforementioned date, hosted by a dubious organization called ‘ACT! For Canada’.
Mr. Boby publicly campaigns to stop the building of Mosques, frequently spreads hateful messages regarding Muslims and he is linked to an extremist group in Britain called the English Defence League. He says that Islam encourages “paedophilia, sexual abuse and pimping”, while his Canadian hosts compare Muslims to Nazis.

The right to communal worship is a human right protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is a Canadian value. Mr. Boby is attacking fundamental Canadian values and the Charter and demonizing Muslims.
Although Mr. Boby is free to speak in Canada as long as he does not violate our laws, I urge that, as a publicly funded institution, the OPL should deny space to a known hate monger from spreading his hateful message.
Hatemongering only does harm to Canada’s social cohesion, divides Canadians and as such, is an affront to our publicly funded institutions. The OPL should not allow this to stand.
Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response and leadership.
Sincerely
[Your Name] [City, Province]
